The holidays are over, thank goodness. While I love the time of year, I also love the fresh start of the new year. It gives me the energy and motivation to get back at it! What will my goals be for 2014??? I better get to work. For now, it's to go home and enjoy a quiet NYE with my kids, get some rest and kick this silly cold that is dragging me down. Happy New Years!

Fit = Happy
I get the same question over and over and over... "What time do you get up???" And people act like no one has even gotten up before 5a.m. before. Yep, I get up every day at 4:45a.m. It's my routine. It works for me. Do I like it. NOPE. Do I give myself and option? NOPE. Because for me, that is it. The only time that I could possibly squeeze in a trip to the gym alone, no interruptions, clear head, nowhere else to be. And I realized that it's my happy place. Everyone else there got up at the same time, all with the same goal. I love it. But do I love getting up early. NOPE. I never will. But you do what you have to do to succeed. Some people squeeze it in over lunch breaks or after work, between a long wild work day and the million things that go on in a working mom's evening (do I even need to list it out?) that will never be an option for me. So mornings it is. Forever... or atleast until I retire :)
I realized this morning, despite having risen before the sun and exhausted from a serious whooping in class, everyone leaving was smiling! And I know for certain it is because fit people are happy people, even at 5a.m. Eating smart, taking care of your mind and body can only lead to happiness, I'm sure of it :)

Set up for Success
I'm back at work after a long week of travel, some for fun, mostly for work. Travel is always tough on the diet and exercise routine. I did as much as I could with a busy schedule hitting the hotel gym 2x in a week, better than nothing I guess! I did get to try out SoulCycle, I have always wanted to take a class and see what the hype was all about! Whoa it was wild, and a pretty decent workout too. This is me with a co-worker and our super fly instructor. Wearing a new sweatshirt purchased as a gift to myself of course, gotta have the swag. :)
The best part about being gone and out of routine for a couple weeks is that I always feel energized to start fresh when I come home. This along with the fact that my husband and children must have survived on air while I was gone because the fridge and cupboard were bare when I returned...hmmmm. Anyway, took that as an opportunity to clean out the old stuff and start fresh with a grocery run and re-stocked my work drawers with snacks that will help me succeed in staying on track with my diet!
It's so tough around the holidays, if it were up to me I would stock my drawer with Reese's peanut butter Christmas trees :) But I am going to give these healthier snacks a chance.

The results are in!
I was happy to get the email today with my name on the list of the 30in30 achievers! Free spin classes and a tank that says Im An Animal. Totally worth it.
I am headed to Vegas for a short fun weekend with friends then on to LA for work for a week. Hoping to hit up some hotel gyms and maybe find a healthy place to eat here at there. Might be relying on a stash of protein bars to keep me on track. I am hoping that this will be a good thing giving me extra time to workout and maybe stay away from some holiday cals... we'll see!

30 in 30! Check!
Why would I pick my busiest month at work, a month where my kids would of course get sick, husband traveling, a schedule that would put anyone over the edge, and add to it a 30 day workout competition??? I still don't know what I was thinking. But who cares, I DID IT! I wrapped up November with an hour and a half burn workshop to top off a month of working out like a nutcase. I am so proud of myself, and I am very happy it is over so today I got back my Wednesday rest day :)
I saw a segment on 60 Minutes this weekend where the interviewer asked a free-diver why she would do these insane things to her body that made her hurt, tired, exhausted, and she said "I like to know what I'm made of." That pretty much says it all for me.

Day 30. Proud Fit Working Mom. :)

Frozen.
Frozen. That's my word of the week! It's freezing cold here which makes me want to eat, all the time, what is it with cold weather??? It's like hibernation mode kicks in. And because we will be eating pie most of the week I settled on frozen meals for the week. I am so thankful for frozen meals. How else would a busy working mom keep from eating at a drive-thru every day!
These are my choices this week:
Breakfast
Lunch
And very possibly will repeat for dinner...
Pretty tasty. Easy to log calories. Good balance to the extra helpings of pie I plan to have on Thursday, Friday, maybe even Saturday!
Day 25 of my 30 in 30 challenge, I did workout #26 today and still going strong!

Keep at It.
It is so much easier to give up. I have no real reason to do this 30 in 30 contest and I am just plain tired, tired of working out, tired of being starving all day and tired of balancing 25 things at a time. But I am going to keep at it. I have good work friends keeping me accountable and I am trying to finish this thing out. The holiday sure make for a lot of reasons to eat tasty food and skip working out! This is me, motivating myself to get to the gym tonite on a dreary, cold Thursday night! You can do it!

Day 19 and going strong.
Still plugging away at my 30 in 30 challenge. It's helping me stay on track this month and although its been a little challenging getting them all in, its been kind of fun and I am enjoying a little extra me time, even if its while sweating my buns off! This week is the ultimate challenge, husband out of town, work is nuts as usual and to top it all off I have one home with a fever. But I am handling it with ease. Or really just handling it.
Sunday I went to an afternoon class called Fusion Fire, it was one of my favorites last winter but when the weather gets hot who wants to be in a room heated to 90??? Well, this Sunday was an exceptionally warm day in November, normally I would have gone for an outdoor workout and enjoyed the weather but keeping on track with the contest, the sun was blazing through the windows and the workout was killer being #17 in a row... capture this gem of my bright red face. Proof I was working hard, even if it felt like working out in Dante's inferno!
19 days down. 11 to go.

What Happened?????
OMG. What happened to me. Last blog post was WHEN???? Well, let's see... I got a big promotion at work, yipppeee, which means I am working like a dog, not yippeeee. Hubby traveling. Kids busy. It gets dark just shortly after lunch time and I could give you atleast 100 more excuses why I fell off my own wagon. But just like I said, they are just a bunch of excuses. Time to get over it.
So I'm back, and I meant to post this on November 1 and now it's November 10th. Oops.
I needed something to really get me going this month so I joined in a friendly little competition at the gym called 30 in 30. Easy, right? 30 workouts in the 30 days of November. Day 10, I have worked out 9 times and today I did an extra long burnout class that counted for 2, so I'm on track to complete this baby and win myself some spin classes! Yep, workout like a freak to win workouts. Crazy :) But hey, that's me.

Work B**ch
Another weekend down, another week of hard work begins. I'm solo at home again this week and once again, trying to figure out how to balance it all, workout and not eat my weight in Halloween candy! It sure would be helpful if the stores would wait to put that candy out until the week of Halloween and not months before, I just cant help but buy it!
I'm always looking for motivation. Sometimes its on TV, sometimes in music, today I am motivated by Britney. Yep, guilty, I do like Britney Spears...always have :) But what I really like is her newest song, Work B**tch! Talk about getting right to the point, "you want a hot body, you want a Maserati, you better work b**tch. Now get to work b**tch!" I have been singing this over and over in my head for weeks, when I feel like quitting I am just going to channel Brit.

Tighten Up
It's Tuesday and I am back from the land of grapes, wine, sun and fun! It felt great to take some time off, drink a "few" glasses of wine and rejuvenate! Now that I'm back and my summer full of vacations has come to an end, I am ready to tighten up again so my pants don't tighten up, you know what I mean??? Fall is here, cold weather means comfort food for me, so I will be sharing all my favorites with you along with favorite songs, workouts, gear, you name it, we can share it here!
Starting with the all time #1 reason we all succeed or fail. DIET. Ugh. Too bad we can't live on candy and diet coke. Instead I found this handy little info graphic from my favorite calorie counting website myfitnesspal.com, and am sharing it with you! Really I just think it's a cute little picture, but the main message-calories in, calories out. Burn what you eat, eat what you know you will burn. That's what I tell myself. I am not in the habit of saying no to the occasional office donut or a late night DQ run, as long as I account for it (and don't make it a daily habit...) and plan to work it off!

Brand New Day
Normally I dread Monday, however after the not-so-wonderful week we've had, I welcome this Monday with open arms! Plus its a cool 60 degrees so the fall boots are out and I am headed to San Francisco for a girls getaway weekend on Thursday!
I saw this on instagram and had to share it

If you want to change your body you have to work for it. If you want to
eat DQ Blizzards for dinner (yep, that's what I had last night...) then
you have to pay for it by double dipping the workouts this week or skipping dessert a few nights in a row. The
ball is in your court. This what I am telling myself as the fall season
gets underway and the mornings are dark and cool and great for laying in
bed and skipping the gym...
Workouts:
Saturday - light cardio and lots of walking
Sunday - circuit interval class
Monday - early a.m. fusion class + evening walk/jog (if the rain stops!)

A week from...
Wow. Talk about a rough week. You think you have it all figured out, we were going to have a fun-filled week without daddy, spend the last few days at the pool, work outs over my lunch break, and then everything hit the fan (horrible allergies, very sick kid, traveling husband, no sleep, busy at work... that's just the short list) and that leaves me tired, cranky, hungry (craving caffeine and carbs, eek!) and just plain worn down. Not to mention no time for the gym :( I guess that's where we have to do our best to remain flexible and make up for it next week. The best laid plans...
I am channeling my inner super woman to make it through the end of the week, planning to rest all weekend and maybe next week will be better. I'm sure of it.
The bright spot for the week, the weather is cooling down and fall is coming soon which means outdoor workouts again (without worrying about melting!) and fall boots and sweaters, yippee!

Have You Ever???
Have you ever gotten a babysitter so you could go workout? That sounds insane, I realize. I do it, not all the time, but sometimes... guilty! I use it so I can do housework and grocery shop too. Last night I had grandma sleep over so I could hit an early morning bikini boot camp. What I didn't realize was my oldest was going to get the flu and I was going to spend all yesterday and last night waiting hand and foot on him, cleaning throw up... all that fun mom stuff. But I had already organized the babysitter, so what's a mom to do? Go anyway, sleep in??? Well, I made the decision to go anyway, probably should have slept in, but I was proud of myself for going. And bought myself a new tank top from the gym gift shop as a reward. I'm all for self-rewarding :)
I got a great quote from a fellow fit working mom and thought I would share. Seems to be a good fit for my day, week and pretty much life.

Hungry.
I am hungry ALL the time. Just plain starving. Probably from working out so hard early in the morning, or running around all day at work, or chasing children around. I keep track of my calories for the most part and I'm sure I eat enough (too much most of the time) but man, I'M HUNGRY! I'm not a big supplement person, powder kind of grosses me out and I like to try my best to eat real food but maybe it's time to mix it up. So I am attempting to add a little protein powder to my mornings. Going to drink it right when I get home from the gym, probably chug it fast since the taste grosses me out. I realize everyone does this, this is not new information... but it's new for me. Will see if it helps with my unstoppable urge to eat.
Tried out a new workout this morning! I ordered these DVD's awhile back but have yet to try them. Waking up with Jillian is a great start to the day. This one was her Ripped in 30 workout, not the hardest thing I have ever done but better than sleeping in!

Maximing the Day
As usual, Monday has come too fast and here we are at it again. I have a traveling husband this week so doing my best to cram it all in while on my own. So I'm back to the idea of the lunch-break workout. I find it funny that I am reading the last few chapters of Maxed Out while cramming a fast workout in over my lunch break then eating lunch while catching up on missed emails at my desk... I guess we do what we have to do to get it done :)
What made my day extra special? Packing a new pair of kicks in my bag to test out today. I have been on the hunt for good shoes for awhile now. Let's hope these are the ones!
Workouts:
Weekend - REST!
Today - 40 minutes, intervals on treadmill, stair climber, elliptical

It's not what it seems.
Back to work after a long, fun-filled holiday weekend is always a challenge. I didn't get all my laundry done, didn't make it to the grocery store, my house is a mess... the list goes on and on. But all worth it to have a fun weekend at the lake with my family enjoying quality time with each other, celebrating my 10 year wedding anniversary and just relaxing (well, as much relaxing as you can do with small children...)
I started a new book this weekend. I read a little blurb online about it and thought it sounded like a quick read, its called Maxed Out. Sound familiar? Well, I won't go into details other than to say that the author is pretty much spot-on in her description of the struggle of balancing it all as working mothers with working husbands and busy children. If you like to read and want to feel like you are not alone in the busy world of working motherhood, oh and IF you have time to read... this one's a good one (in my opinion)!
My biggest takeaway, there are so many other moms in the same situation as me, stretched to the max, pressed for time, and I am just going to keep doing the best I can. Some people make it look easy, but you never know, some things are not what they seem. And getting up REALLY early is never going to go away, or at least until my kids are in college.

Some days...
Confession... some days I just don't want to be a working mom anymore. I am tired of getting up early. I am tired of running a million miles an hour and only seeing my kids for a couple hours. I'm tired today. I just want to play at the park and swim in the pool and run around with my kids all day every day.
We can all dream, right???
This week I have turned over a new leaf. While I love getting up early every day, I realize I am getting kind of tired. I could use a little more sleep. Also, I have been working out every morning but that doesn't give my hubs any time to workout and he is back on the bandwagon so we need to find a balance. I have always wondered if I could be one of those people who works out on her lunch break. I'm not a big sweater, my hair is often in a ponytail and the gym is only 10 minutes from my office so the logistics seem like they just might just work. Yesterday I tried it out and SUCCESS, I could get used to this! Such a nice break in the day, felt like a restart button was pushed at lunch time. Going to try to work in this little routine 2x a week and see how it goes.
Now let's see if I can stick to it.

Clean it up.
Fall is coming. It's time for change, time to clean it up. Summer has been fun and so has allowing myself to eat anything in sight! So many posts about exercise and great recipes, but maybe I should start posting more about my bad habits... like this one :)
I am vowing to clean it up. My favorite trainer (Jillian of course) talked so much in her show about monitoring what goes in as much as what you burn. So probably waking up at 4:30 am to workout like a crazy person is not worth it when you eat half a pizza for dinner...easier said than done. Everyone deserves to cheat here and there, but I am starting this fall with more veggies, more protein and less of my favorite food group, sugar!!! Monday is almost over, so far so good. Let's see what happens after dinner. I may need some suggestions on low cal, lower sugar desserts. Because let's get serious, I am not giving up dessert.

High-School Skinny
I heard the funniest radio commercial on the way to work today. Take a pill... get high-school skinny. HA! High school skinny? Who wants to look like that? I sure don't remember having a super fly body in high school! Hey radio person, how about get up and go to the gym and eat healthy and get strong... it reminded me that there is no easy way to do this, and it's worth it to put in all the hard work every day. Getting up this week has been especially painful after a fun weekend celebrating my sister's wedding, but it's worth it. Once I'm working out and in the groove, I never regret it and it frees up my evening to do all sorts of fun things!
So after 2 days in a row of leg workouts that having me limping around the office, I will consider today "high school skinny" day and maybe pass on that afternoon cookie :)

Summer Weather
Sometimes I get caught up in workout classes and fitness machines and forget how amazing an outdoor workout can be. Somehow the summer has flown by and the winter will be here before we know it so I am reminding myself I need to get outside as much as I can. I used to be so good about walking and bike rides and lately, well... we have been lazy. So this week we are back at it. Walking home when we can, running around in the yard, riding bikes, even if it is just to the park and back. The benefits of exercise plus breathing in the fresh air while spending time with my kids is priceless.
Plus, there are so many amazing workouts you can do outside, especially when pushing a stroller full of 40 lbs of boy :)

Planning Ahead
Why does Monday always come so fast?? Our weekend was jam packed with festivals, ball games, our big race, pool time and major house cleaning. Somehow I did manage to sneak in one quick trip to the gym (negotiated during nap time of course) for an afternoon fire class where I think I sweat out every ounce of water in my entire body. I think I will save that again for winter.
Anyway, we had a blast running Race for the Cure with 15,000 other KC friends. I ran with my 4 year old and we managed to run almost the entire race. I love watching my kids get into running and fitness and helping them learn to lead a healthy lifestyle!
Here is our family, we were part of a big team of friends, family and co-workers all there to support my sister-in-law wearing KC Royals blue.
So as usual, we have a jam-packed, fun-filled weekend which leaves all of us completely exhausted on Monday morning :) And this is wedding week for my little sister which means it's not getting any easier anytime soon. All the more reason to do some planning ahead. This summer has been wild and I have strayed from my meal planning and I can tell the difference in how often I am eating on the go. So back to pre-planning my meals, starting with breakfast! I always struggle with new breakfast ideas and default to eggs, day after day, BORING. So I got online, searched crockpot+breakfast and found an amazing recipe for apple cinnamon steel cut oatmeal, cooks in the crockpot and serves 8! That's enough breakfast (if you double the recipe) for the whole family for the week.

Getting Healthy for a Cause
TGIF! The weekend ahead is going to be a fun one for me, a baseball game, a birthday party and on of my favorite KC events, Race for the Cure! I love the opportunity to run for a good cause :) My hubs and I are good for at least 10 or more charity races a year. I'm an addict, what a great thing to be addicted to though! So Sunday we will Race for a Cure with Susan G. Komen and 15,000 of our KC friends. It's a bittersweet race, we have been running this race almost every year since we have been married and in KC and it is one of our favs. Every year I love the energy, I push myself so hard because I watch people around me who have been through hell and I always tear up when I see the amazing survivors in pink shirts, but never did I think I would be running to find a cure for someone in my family... This year, we have a 50+ person team running for my sister in law (who just finished her last chemo treatment) and we are so happy to be able to support her and such an amazing cause.
So here's to getting in shape while supporting a cause close to my heart :)

Hiking, Travel and Back to real life.
Ahhhh, coming back to real life never felt so good. But what an amazing vacation we had! We walked, we hiked, drank local beer, hiked some more and watched our friends get married with a view of the mountains and winery behind them. Amazing. And now I am SO happy to be home. Back to my life as a working mom, where I belong!
Luckily, there is no need for the hotel gym when you have this just down the road
We did a shorter, slightly more challenging hike the first day then a 6 mile hike the second day filled with waterfalls and amazing forests. The beauty of nature never disappoints!
So back to that real life thing... home again with my hands full, no time, traveling husband, the usual. So I decided to add these gems to my collection. Pretty cheap on amazon, FYI. Haven't tried them out yet, but they are on my list for the week and will give you a recap soon!
Note: Check out the Let's Eat page for a fun new recipe, plans beginning soon to update this page WAY more frequently!

Travel Workout Planning
It's time to fly the friendly skies once again, this time we are headed to Oregon. Hoping to get in some scenic hikes while we are there! Usually I am planning for what kind of workouts to do when my husband is traveling and I'm stuck at home, but this time we are both heading out together, so I need a game plan for what to do while I'm there.
I love to get online and look up different treadmill workouts for when I'm bored. One of my go-to's is a site called IowaGirlEats. (She has great recipes too!)
Idea #1: Hike. As many times as we can.
Idea #2: Find the gym. I checked the website to make sure our (semi-cheap) hotel had a gym. Nothing fancy but it will do!

This one is a fav - quick and not-so easy.
And when in doubt, or when the cheap hotel treadmill is straight out of the 80's, there is always my phone. I like to download apps for free workouts. The best- Nike Training Club. If you don't have it you need to get it. Now. You can do these anytime, anywhere, and they are killer. Try it.
So off to Oregon, hopefully will be reporting back on Monday about a vacation full of fun and relaxation (I did look up local day spas) and maybe a workout or two. :)

Making Adjustments
Day 2 sporting my sexy new arm candy (also known as fitbit) and I am liking where this is headed. I am currently obsessed with the thing, I launch the app every other minute to look at my progress, but I'm sure that will die down shortly :)
You know I am a huge advocate for counting calories with my handy dandy app. Great news, I learned yesterday that the myfitnesspal app and my fitbit are compatible! It's like we are a match made in heaven. So I am going to be able to see the true secret to my shape... calories in vs. calories out!
What I am learning from it is that I run around like a crazy person when I am at home chasing my boys around (I took as many steps between 5:30pm and bedtime as I did the ENTIRE day!!) but at work I sit a LOT. I have busy days where I run around a lot but really, I do a lot of sitting. If you're like me, you probably check a lot of emails during the day. And you probably have a phone where you can check those emails. SO, new plan of action: 1x, maybe 2x (that might be pushing it) a day I am going to walk laps around my office warehouse and check my emails. Might not happen every day but as long as I can fit it in here and there I know I am making strides in the right direction. Or at least justifying that afternoon piece of chocolate!
Warning: today I walked into a chair and almost fell over. So either pay attention while you are walking and typing or hope that no one is watching... pretty sure someone saw me.

Back on the Map
Well, I kind of fell off the grid there for awhile... every year my company has a big conference downtown and we serve as the event staff. It's a long week, a lot of walking, not a lot of sleeping and overall exhausting (atleast it's a good time!). So I'm back, for a few days anyway before we head off on yet another trip. This summer=INSANE.
This past week I celebrated by 32nd birthday! I had to work all day but I was lucky enough to be one of the presenters on the main stage. I have to say I feel amazing at 32! 2 kids, great job, extremely busy life and a lot of hard work at the gym has really paid off and I felt comfortable on stage in front of a LOT of women! Sometimes it feels good just to be proud of yourself. This was a great moment in my life!
I love a birthday full of fitness related gifts. It happens to me every year, these people have me all figured out! My kids gave me a new iPod to replace my broken one and the hubs gave me this fancy new Fitbit. I put it on today, but I have no idea how it works yet... that is on my to-do list tonite. Stay tuned on that one.
My fitness-loving sister gave me a bunch of new lulu workout gear and a cute little bag to take with me to the gym to store my keys and phone so I had to test it all out this morning :)
Today I am back at it after a wild week but we are traveling again this weekend so upon our return I am really looking forward to getting back on the wagon. Overall I have donegood just ok staying on the healthy wagon but post-vacation its time to put just a little more effort into it. I think I got a little lazy this summer... birthday=way too much cookie cake. But you only celebrate like that once a year, right???

That's what you get for waking up in Vegas...
I'm back from Vegas. Enough said. Will not go into details. Just picture a lot of fun, a lot of eating drinking and celebrating. Which makes returning home to my normal routine sort of like torture. One day you are up til 4am, the next day you are getting up at 4am. Eek.
I have managed to sneak in a couple workouts this week but neither do I even remember I am functioning on such little sleep. And I'm on my own with the kids until Sunday while my husband takes his turn a bachelor party so I am going to be getting creative with the workouts again.
The midwest is getting hot so we don't get out on the trails as often or we would melt! But when we do, we make it count. I am a fan of letting anyone get out of a stroller, as long as they can keep up!
We are so lucky to have a trail system close by. If the weather is nice, you will find us here, getting as much fresh air and exercise as possible. (photo courtesy of my 4 year old)

Workouts:
Wednesday - bikini boot camp (I showed up...not sure how much I really burned)
Today - early a.m. barre class
Weekend - 7 mile run with a friend in training (hired a shared morning babysitter for our boys, now that's what I call a great idea!)
Looking for some variety to introduce into my workout routine this fall...stay tuned.

What to Eat?
It's amazing how fast the week can fly by when you are busy! Don't get me wrong, I am very grateful for Friday but where did this week go? Because I'm pretty sure I need to go to the grocery store...
Because I have nodesire time to drag myself to the store, we have been eating most meals from a drive through. It's always a struggle for us to make a good decision where the kids can eat what they want and mom can get something relatively healthy. My oldest bases his choices on who has the best toy. And really, we need another plastic happy meal toy in our house... My littlest won't eat a chicken nugget (so strange to me) and drops most things on the floor anyway. So we end up at eating cheese quesedillas 4 out of 5 days. That is, until I discovered Dairy Queen and their Kids LiveWell Menu.
It's a turkey wrap with ranch (we lose the ranch), banana and a fruit smoothie (sometimes we get milk) and that is what I call a healthy meal. Even mom can eat this one.
I'm off to Vegas this weekend for a bachelorette party for my sister's upcoming wedding. Going to do a workout with a friend who runs a gym out there, hoping I don't end up in tears! More on that when I'm back next Wednesday.

Back to Business
Vacation is over. Monday has come. It's time to get back to work. Sad :(
Vacay recap: sunny for just a short while, then rain, rain and more rain. But we found all sorts of things to keep us busy. As for workouts, eh... I will blame it on the rain. Got in a few fun sporty activities, one beach jog, one bike ride with my kiddos when the rain broke and some paddle boarding on the lake on the last day.
Now that I'm back to the real world it's time to get back in the groove of the early morning workouts and veggies, which means less beer and powdered donuts (our vacation staples).

Overall it was a week filled with rest and relaxation, well as much relaxation as you can imagine trapped indoors in the rain with a bunch of small children. :)

Beach Bound
I snuck in one last workout after work last night (evening workouts=not my thing) and am taking the next week off, other than maybe a walk or bike ride here and there. But no gym, no classes, no weights, only fun happy workouts :)
The time has come. The car is packed. Florida here we come. Only 17 hours in the car. With kids. :)
